Arctic weather is once again pushing our nation’s energy infrastructure to its limits. How is the power grid holding up? In Texas, much better than in 2021 when freezing temperatures caused widespread blackouts for days. One of the biggest differences this time is increased battery storage, which has proven to be a reliable and economical grid asset during extreme weather events. In the aftermath of Winter Storm Uri in Texas, when millions lost power, renewables were wrongly cast as the culprit, and political efforts emerged to slow our industry’s growth. But through our state affiliate, the Texas Advanced Energy Business Alliance, we’ve consistently pushed back, working to preserve fair, technology-neutral market conditions in ERCOT so that our technologies can compete and deliver. Our work preserving favorable market conditions allowed advanced energy, including energy storage solutions, to deploy at greater scale than ever before, resulting in a much more diversified and flexible Texas grid that keeps the lights on even in critical moments like these. Other states and grid operators should follow the example in Texas by making it easier to build advanced energy and leverage these technologies to strengthen grid resilience and lower energy costs.
