Thirty-six states are holding gubernatorial elections this year, and Advanced Energy United is proud to be a resource for candidates across the country interested in learning more about how advanced energy technologies can play a bigger role in delivering both affordability and reliability in our energy system. Just this week, we convened roundtable discussions in Wisconsin and Colorado with candidates for Governor, bringing together several of our member company representatives to talk about energy issues, such as ways to expand the role of distributed energy resources (DERs) and virtual power plant (VPP) programs, reforms to integrated resource planning, and avenues for addressing ongoing siting and permitting barriers for large-scale projects. The opportunities for advanced energy are significant but realizing them will require industry and policymaker collaboration. With the right policies in place, we can deliver the improvements that consumers and businesses are looking for.

Colorado Lawmakers Pass Grid Optimization Act to Unlock Faster, Lower-Cost Power
Colorado lawmakers have passed the Colorado Grid Optimization Act (HB 1081), which is designed to deliver more affordable, reliable energy by squeezing more capacity out of Colorado’s existing transmission system. United’s Emilie Olson stated that by using existing infrastructure with the help of proven, advanced transmission technologies (ATTs), Colorado can more cost-effectively tackle near-term reliability needs while preparing the existing system for extreme weather conditions, wildfire risk, and continued load growth. The CERTAIN Act Endorsed by Advanced Energy United
This week, several lawmakers introduced the Creating Expeditious Reviews to Transform American Infrastructure Now (CERTAIN) Act, a bipartisan bill which aims to streamline federal energy permitting processes that are currently preventing many energy projects from being built efficiently and on time. United’s Dylan Reed commended the representatives' efforts in crafting a comprehensive proposal that emphasizes fairness and accountability in the broken federal permitting process. Read more.>

With 30% rooftop solar penetration nationally, Australia is living, at scale, the DER transformation that many U.S. states can one day expect. Earlier this year, the CHARGED Initiative—a collaboration between United, GridLab, and RMI—brought U.S. utility regulators to see it firsthand. This webinar, moderated by a former U.S. commission chair, will explore the differences between the U.S. and Australian energy grids, and how the U.S. can learn from Australia’s successes and challenges with the high penetration of Consumer Energy Resources (CERs). Base Power is Adapting its Distributed Battery Storage Program for PJM
United member company Base Power is expanding into PJM via a retail electricity license in the Commonwealth Edison territory of Illinois. In most states, the grid charges suppliers based on peak usage of each individual customer—but in Illinois, if one Base customer’s battery is exporting to the grid during peak hours, that “negative demand” is used to offset peak usage from other Base customers.
